We are excited to have renowned engraver John Cook to Bristol again, where he'll be leading a two-day intermediate lettering masterclass. We are pleased to be hosting this special workshop at In Bristol Studio.
This two day intermediate level hand engraving course is aimed at existing jewellers and hand engravers looking to incorporate lettering into their everyday work . Hand cut lettering has always been considered a beautiful embellishment of jewellery items , personalising it to the owner.
Through various exercises we will understand the principles of designing and cut formation of various fonts to produce exciting visual lettering that can be applied to your own jewellery pieces.
Course Deliverables:
An understanding of various types of lettering found on jewellery pieces
Graver preparation specific to lettering
Work-holding
Designing fonts
Techniques for layout and transferring designs
Basic font styles: Block, Roman and Script
Font embellishment techniques: wriggle cuts, ribbon, lined and shadows
Illustrative lettering - including single , 2 and 3 monograms
By the end of the course, you'll be equipped with the foundational skills to integrate personalised, hand-cut lettering into your jewellery pieces with precision and flair.
To enrol in this intermediate-level course, you must have either completed the Introduction to Hand Engraving course with John or possess a basic understanding of engraving techniques. This includes experience with tool preparation and sharpening, transferring designs, and confident use of flat, round, and square gravers.
All lettering exercises will be practised on a flat copper plate, which is included as part of the course materials. You are encouraged to bring your own graver tools, or simply come as you are—tools will be provided, and some may be available for purchase on the day (subject to availability).
A light lunch, snacks and beverages will be provided on both days of the course. If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, please let us know in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Intermediate Hand Engraving Course: Lettering for Jewellers
By bus: nos 42 | 43 | 44 | 45 leave from Colston Avenue or Broadmead Horsefair and stop near Lawrence Hill Station. The number 36 leaves Baldwin Street and stops on Queen Anne Road. For times and further information go to: www.firstgroup.com or call traveline 0871 200 22 33.
On foot: It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk from the Centre of Bristol. The quickest route is to walk across Castle Park, past the Evening Post building onto Old Market Street and carry on until the Lawrence Hill roundabout. Keep going in the same direction and Ducie Road is the second turn on the right. Go past the Barton Hill Settlement, onto Barton Hill Road, left onto Queen Anne Road then right past Barton Hill Primary School. Turn left onto Maze Street where you will see signs directing you to the Studio.
By bike: There are cycle racks in the car park of the Studio. Bikes cannot be brought into the Studio space for Health & Safety reasons.
By train: The Avonmouth – Bristol Temple Meads train stops at Lawrence Hill Station which is a five minute walk to the Studio.
By car: From M32 take exit 3 and follow signposts to Bath. At the first roundabout continue straight onto the A4320 – St Phillips Causeway. Keep in the left lane and take the slip road left by Big Yellow Storage, onto Days Road. At the little roundabout, take the second exit onto Barrow Road, which turns into Barton Hill Road. Follow the signs to the Studio from there.
