General Care Handling & Storage

Perfumes, lotions, sunscreens and hair products should always be applied before putting on jewellery, as these substances can tarnish metal and dull gemstones over time.

When you are not wearing your jewellery, store it in an airtight container with soft cushioning to protect it from sunlight, moisture and abrasion. Some jewellery boxes contain acidic dyes or adhesives that may accelerate tarnishing, so be mindful of long-term storage environments. When transporting jewellery, protect each piece in a small box or pouch to minimise the risk of impact or tangling.

Although gold and platinum are durable metals, they will scratch with wear and may bend if subjected to enough pressure. Diamonds, sapphires and rubies are prized for their hardness on the Mohs scale, meaning they resist scratching very well, but hardness does not mean they are indestructible. Their toughness is only moderate, and natural inclusions within the stones can create points of vulnerability. For this reason, even the hardest gemstones can chip or crack if struck at the right angle, so it is important to avoid knocking jewellery against hard surfaces such as door handles, worktops or gym equipment.

Cleaning & Refinishing

Most jewellery can be cleaned at home using a bowl of warm water with a small amount of mild dish detergent and a soft toothbrush. For pieces requiring a deeper clean, such as engagement rings or jewellery with gemstones, soaking them in warm water for around half an hour can loosen trapped dirt. Pay particular attention to the back of the setting, where dirt builds up and affects the sparkle. After brushing, rinse the jewellery thoroughly and dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth.

While 9ct gold is more resistant to tarnishing than silver, it may still develop a natural patina over time due to it's copper content in the alloy. Tarnish can be removed using a polishing cloth or a silver dip solution. Polishing cloths may remove satin finish, so for jewellery with these finishes, silver dip may be more suitable. Always read the product instructions and use protective gloves when handling chemical dips. Certain gemstones, including emeralds, lapis, turquoise, opals and pearls, should never be immersed in chemical dips, as they can be permanently damaged. After any chemical treatment, jewellery should be rinsed thoroughly and dried completely.

We do not recommend using an ultrasonic cleaner at home without professional supervision. Improper use can damage gemstones, loosen settings, or damage your knuckles and cause arthritis. For particularly stubborn dirt, we are happy to arrange a professional deep clean for you.

Surface finishes such as satin, frosted or polish will naturally wear with time. Matte finishes, in particular, can begin to soften after a few months of regular wear. Refinishing these surfaces annually is recommended to maintain the appearance and protect the longevity of your jewellery. Items within our collection qualify for a complimentary annual check-up, refinish and clean at our Bristol studio.

Stone Set Rings

Rings with settings should be checked annually, as claws and bezels experience natural wear over time. This is especially true for designs with prominent settings, outer stones, or softer metals such as sterling silver or 9ct gold. Settings that protrude from the surface of the jewellery are more prone to snagging on clothing; if this happens, or if you become aware of a loose stone, please contact us for an inspection.

When wearing multiple rings on the same finger, it is important to choose metals of the same type or carat. Metals of different hardness can wear against one another, leading to scratches, abrasion or even damage to gemstones.

Allergies, Nickel & Copper

All of our jewellery is nickel-free; however, some individuals may still be sensitive to copper, which is present in alloys such as sterling silver and 9ct gold. If you have sensitive skin or known metal allergies, we recommend choosing hypoallergenic metals such as 18ct gold, 22ct gold, or platinum. In rare cases, sensitivities may develop or change over time, including after pregnancy.

If you are unsure about your personal allergens, it is advisable to speak with a doctor or specialist before purchasing jewellery. Ensuring that rings fit correctly is also important, since a ring that is too tight may trap soaps or chemicals against the skin and cause irritation. To prevent this, remove your ring when using harsh cleaning products or chemicals.
